France is home to some of the most beautiful and majestic golf courses in Europe. Spectacular locations combined with picturesque backdrops, impeccable food and wine and well laid out courses have made France a golf destination that is now preferred over even the conventional favorites Spain and Portugal. Here are some golf destinations that are well worth a visit.

Cote d’Opale

Golf de Belle Dune, the southernmost club, comprises of Le Touquet and Hardelot. Situated in the region of Cote d’Opale, it offers spectacular views of the Channel. Opened for play in 1992, this course measures 5,883 meters from the back tees and the par is set at 71. The first few holes meander through the green maritime pine trees are less challenging but the next set of holes that wind their way through poplars and silver birch, heighten the level of difficulty.

Normandy

A bit further down the coast is the region of Normandy, which is known for its historic towns such as Rouen. You can find good golf courses throughout the region, one such being the Saint Saens Golf Course. This 19th century clubhouse in Baryon Village offers spectacular views of the surroundings. The extensive woodlands, greens, lakes and ponds make the game both interesting and challenging.

Designed by Tom Simpson and Henry Cotton, Golf Barriere de Deauville is yet another course that is absolutely stunning. Offering spectacular views of the English Channel, the golf course has a beautiful technical layout featuring splendid fairways and a variety of holes that offer various levels of difficulty.

Brittany

This beautiful region is home to the fabulous golfing resort of La Baule, which features 45 excellent holes that offer challenges for all skill levels. Overlooking a series of rugged cliffs and sandy bays, the Val Andre Golf Club with a 18 hole course and a par of 72 is an absolute stunner. Considered to be one of the best golf courses in Europe, the signature holes of the 10th and 11th can test the skills of even the most experienced golfer.

Chantilly

Chantilly, the region around Paris, is also home to some great golf courses. Situated in the forests of Ile de France, the Chantilly Vineuil Golf Course laid out by the great English architect in 1906 is ranked among Europe’s top five courses. A heartland style course, it not only offers undulating magnificent views but also tests a golfer’s skill to the optimum. You can also visit the traditional clubhouse, where even now the distinctive British ambience still lingers.
